Buying ferrous metals

Nord Holding buys secondary raw materials from ferrous metals, offering favorable prices.
Our activity is carried out in accordance with the regulations of Bulgarian Waste Management Law.

We are a leading company for management of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in Bulgaria, as well as other types of waste.
Our partners are a number of companies operating in Bulgaria.

What types of ferrous metals do we buy?

Nord Holding buys steel, iron, cast iron, scrap from various metal alloys, which are categorized as ferrous.

Ferrous metals can be successfully recycled, and subsequently resources are produced such as pipes and/or other types of blanks.

The latter are used for production of various products, structures and others etc. saving resources.

We buy cast iron – it is one of the most widely used ferrous metals. It finds application in the production of water pipes, tools, household needs etc.

  • Iron

Iron and its alloys are widely used in industry today. It is one of the main types of ferrous metals that can be recycled to obtain new resources.

  • Scrap

Scrap metal, regardless of whether it is ferrous or non-ferrous, is collected and processed as secondary raw material by Nord Holding.

All other types of waste ferrous metals, such as new scrap cuttings (busheling), pressed and cut metal scrap (Henschel),
bales, and metal packaging can be bought upon enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nord Holding buys all types of ferrous metals, including iron, turnings, metal alloys, cast iron, scrap, etc.

Ferrous metals are all secondary raw materials containing iron and iron alloys, tentatively including manganese and chromium containing in iron alloys. Ferrous metals are mainly divided into two main types – these are steel and cast iron.

Purchase

Ferrous metals are bulky and heavy, so it is important to avoid unnecessary transportation costs
from the earliest stage possible.

For this reason, Nord holding provides multi-lift containers to its customers to place at their waste generation sites.
Once the containers are full, Nord holding transports them either to its own sites or to recycling facilities (customers handing over proven quality material regularly have it transported directly to the recycling facilities).

Upon arrival of a waste ferrous metal shipment, the following
activities are performed:

  • ACCEPTING THE MATERIALS
The materials are measured on certified scales, and our experienced staff determine their exact type.
  • RADIATION CONTROL
Ferrous metals pose an increased risk of radioactive contamination, so upon acceptance, they are controlled for the presence of radiation above permissible norms.
  • SIZING, SORTING, AND STORING
Sorting by type of material is carried out by specially trained staff. The maximum size requirement for each ferrous metal piece is 1500 x 500 x 500 mm, so any pieces exceeding these dimensions are set aside and cut prior to sorting.
  • CLEANING
The scrap needs to be free of excessive contamination, as well as cleaned from any non-metallic impurities and unacceptable materials such as steel wires, steel ropes, shavings, automotive parts (non-ferrous metals, tyres and seats, burned tyres, batteries, uncut fuel tanks), large / solid pieces of scrap, galvanized, tinned or enameled materials.
  • PACKAGING
The packing operations permitted for waste ferrous metals are thin scrap baling and briquetting of turnings. Pressing helps reduce the volume of the load to be transported as well as subsequent melt losses.
  • TRANSPORTATION
The company uses its own vehicles to transport most of the materials. Purchased waste can be loaded at the seller‘s warehouse, and ready-to-sell waste can be transported to recycling facilities. Railway wagons and bulk vessels are also used to transport ferrous metals.

Sale and handover
to recycling facilities

Nord holding’s clients are steel manufacturers from a number of locations in the country and abroad.
The company has maintained long-standing relationships with Stomana Industry S.A.
and with steel processors in Turkey and North Macedonia.

Recycling of waste ferrous metals

черни метали ferrous metals

Waste ferrous metals are processed into electric arc furnaces (EAF) which heat the scrap to about 3000°C generated by an electric arc made of electrodes.

Тhe process entails refining operations such as checking the chemical composition of the steel and making potential adjustments to the specification of the final product.
Waste ferrous metal melting produces semi-finished castings that differ in shape, chemical composition and physical properties, and meet certain standards.

Subsequently, the castings are reheated so as to be shaped into the desired products such as sheets, rods, parts, etc., which are made use of in the manufacture of vehicle chassis, machinery, infrastructure details, construction and household materials, and many other daily life steel products.

Waste ferrous metal recycling has substantial economic benefits compared to the production of iron ore steel.

BENEFITS

Waste ferrous metals are available at recycling site locations, and short-distance shipments
keep transportation costs within reasonable limits.
